After months of practising my results in writing are worse (2 tests in a row)
than when i first took the test without any preparation. Frustrating.
I did improve in reading and listening, i never practised either. No idea what to do really.

Sorry to hear that, Katiss.

Maybe it's time to take a break for a month or so. Keep up the reading and listening but work on your own style in writing. I know it's possible to overtrain in sport - perhaps you need to just step back, forget about other people's writing suggestions for a while, and then work on your own style.

Any idea what might have happened in Task 1/Task 2?  You are looking for a Band 8, right?

Have you considered doing the exam in a different center?

Hi Enda,

I've just received my results. Unfortunately, I cannot meet my goal this time.

Here is my score :

Listening: 6.5 🙁

Reading:8.0

Writing: 7.5

Speaking: 7.0

Overall:7.5

My average score is fine. But this time I got a very low score in listening. This was the fourth time I took the test in Australia, and I got 7.5 in listening in the last three times.

Whenever I want to improve one skills, I get low score in others.

I'll have to take another test around 2 or 3 weeks later.

By the way, thanks a lot for your help in writing. I really learn a lot from your website!

Hi Pedram_vaziry

That's great news! Congrats on the big jump in reading and writing. Many people fail to improve by a whole band even in 10 weeks full time study so that's a big improvement. And don't worry about the speaking -  a half a grade fluctuation between test here or there is normal.

I hope that grade is enough for what you need and I hope you tell some others to drop by!

Many thanks and best wishes.

I made it by your help. actually I owe you for guiding me how to write. you spend a lot of time to help others.

I think I can launch my visa process with this score but maybe in future I need 7 in each band. So I will be back after some relaxation.

thank you so much.

Hi Ramesh

Thanks for posting your results. Very good scores!

I notice your reading went down but your listening went up -  odd!

You must have been in a high-powered English environment three years ago- that was a really good reading score.

I think it will be relatively easy to improve your writing -  you just need to change your style a little. It might be a bigger psychological adjustment than a linguistic one, but I think you can do it.

Hi Madinarafi5

Sorry to hear that. Great scores in Listening and Reading, and 7.5 is still a good overall score, no matter what anyone thinks.

It's OK to feel bad for a while. But I really hope you achieve what you are dreaming of!

What's your plan now? Can you write a letter to whoever is approving your application? What module or track did you do (academic or general)?

Enda

Hi, Writefix & all

I just got the result. L:5.5; R:6; W:6; S:5; Overall: 5.5

Much weaker than you guys and the Speaking result is terrible. I didn't prepare it actually, because I actually have some meetings in English regularly. But I found it's quite difficult to describe sth in Part2--I remember that when I got the topic about music, my brain was empty......so I cannot meet the 1mins I think....terrible experience....

Writefix, thanks for your help to give me the detail improvement suggestion in writing. I got a 6 in writing this time. Writing was the most anxious part for me because I was start the preparation too late. The worse thing is that during the practise, I was not able to complete the essay writing on time because I spent lots of time to input in the template then think of the supporting. Really thanks your quick response which suggest me to throw out those 'beautiful' templates and try my best to write in my own words. And then, more suggestion on my structure, gramma etc.

Now I decided to take the exam again next month. I will try my best to practise more. I need to get at lease all 6 in the exam.

Thanks all here, we did got improvement by helping each other.

Hi Christyzhongs!

Thanks for posting your results. It's very helpful and motivating for other people!

Sorry that you didn't get your overall score, but I'm glad that you improved in writing.

For the speaking, have a look at the many topics on this site for Part 2 (the part where you have to speak for 2 minutes -  that's TWO minutes, not one!), and do them against the clock.  Record yourself! It's tough for everyone. Record yourself on your mobile phone or computer. There  should be no gaps. Make sure you answer all the bullet points.

A good suggestion for Speaking Part 2 is to tell a story. Talk about someone or something that really happened. It will be much more interesting for you and the examiner, and much easier.

There are many examples of Part 2 on Google and Youtube.

Remember Part 3 is related to Part 2, so if you talk for 2 minutes about a friend in part 2, then Part 3 might be about friendship. If Part 2 is about a place you go to relax, then Part 3 might be about pressure and stress, or tourism, or leisure.

Don't neglect any skill. Get copies of the test (I recommend the Cambridge series - book 5, 6, 7, or 8, with the CDs) and make sure you get a high score on listening.

Good luck next month and keep practising. Don't give up!

Congratulations Nisha - that's a great score! I'm so happy to see a 7.5 there in writing! What are your plans now and where do you go?

And what was your topic in the last writing exam? Can you remember or are you celebrating too much?!
