Dear,

Can I post individual sentences to be checked. For example, these two sentences:

Which one is correct? Can "away" be removed from the sentence?

My house is situated twenty-minute walk away from the airport. Or

My house is situated twenty minutes walk away from the airport. Or

My house is situated twenty minutes' walk away from the airport.

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter in the hope that your newspaper can help me with a problem regarding
the aircrafts' very loud noise near the airport where I live.

Hi abbakeer!

Well, of course individual sentences can be checked  - but who's going to do the checking?!!!

There are some fantastic writers in this forum and I'm sure they would all have suggestions.

There's a similar thread here on the WordReference.com forum: http://forum.wordreference.com/showthread.php?t=1007855&p=6506292#post6506292

  1. My house is situated twenty-minute walk away from the airport.
  2. My house is situated twenty minutes walk away from the airport.
  3. My house is situated twenty minutes' walk away from the airport.

If you really want to reduce the length, you could leave out  "situated" AND "away."

The first one needs an article because of the word 'walk' - My house is a twenty-minute walk from the airport

We know a house is not a walk, so it's fine -  we understand what is meant.

The second would be fine as: My house is twenty minutes from the airport. Let a conversation start -  force the other person to ask "By car?" It could lead to a beautiful friendship.

I really wouldn't worry about the third one. If someone is worried about that level of grammar mistake, IELTS is not going to be a big problem in their lives.

So to avoid the issue, I would go with these two

  1. My house is twenty minutes from the airport.
  2. My house is a twenty-minute walk from the airport.
